Fast Food Review: Jack in the Box Mini Buffalo Ranch Chicken Sandwiches

Another part of this past weekend's fast food marathon in Oceanside was a stop at Jack for their new mini buffalo ranch chicken sandwiches. They have been out in the San Diego area for more than a couple months, but they just were released everywhere last week. (Amazingly, Jack was able to make a commercial even more annoying than the midgets herding mini cattle.) I was not a big fan of the one time I tried the mini sirloin burgers. The meat was freezer-burned and the buns were not fresh. So I did not have high hopes for the buffalo chicken.

Zach, Elizabeth and I went in to Jack about 10:30 in the morning and the air conditioner was blasting. I do not remember the last time I was indoors in a room this cold that wasn't a walk-in freezer. I bought one order of the sandwiches and a drink for Elizabeth. The total was $5.96. I gave the girl $6, and Zach reached into his pocket and took out a penny and gave it to her.

The girl gave him a death stare. "Don't do that," she said. "That's just going to confuse me." She then put Zach's penny in the drawer, and gave me four cents, and a penny back to Zach. I loved this. Apparently it was easier for her to give two different amounts to two different people than just to give me a nickel. I asked her for some honey mustard. "We don't have any," she said, and gave me some hot sauce.

As soon as we got the sandwiches we headed out to the sun-drenched patio. It was only about 65 degrees out but it felt tropical compared to the ice box inside. Shortly after opening the box of sandwiches, the girl came outside with some honey mustard sauce in her hands. "I found some," she said. "Do you want me to give you this and take back the hot sauce?"

"I don't know," I replied. "That's just going to confuse me." Not surprisingly, this went right over her head.

The sandwiches were damn good. Admittedly I will eat pretty much anything that is fried and covered in hot sauce, and I did have a bit of a hangover from wine tasting the day before, but I was still impressed. They were considerably better than the mini sirloin burgers, especially the buns. I had asked for the honey mustard in case the sandwiches were lousy (I am a big fan of Jack's honey mustard) but I didn't use any of it.

I think I will try these again in the Pasadena area to see if they are as good up this way.
