Steakhouse Burgers & A Happy 4th of July

As always, you have to start with a burger patty you like. Elizabeth just wanted ground beef, but I went for my beloved brisket and short rib blend from Paisanos.

I grilled it for a few minutes, leaving it somewhat rare in the middle, confident it would cook a little more as it rested.

I then topped it with blue cheese. Normally I would wrap the whole thing in foil for a few minutes, but we were out of foil. So I placed it on a small plate and inverted a bowl on top.

Horseradish aioli sounded good so I spread some on the top bun.

I placed the burger and slightly-melted blue cheese on the bun.

And topped it with crispy onion bits.

I would be hard for me to pick my favorite A.1. steak sauce - the Supreme Garlic and the Cracked Peppercorn are awesome - but I do love the Thick & Hearty variety. And it seemed appropriate for a steakhouse burger so I poured it on.

It wasn't the best burger I have made, but it was pretty damn good.

I'm going out of town for a week. I hope you have a great 4th of July.

  3. Inspired by your blog I felt an urge to go get a pljeskavica (Serbian version of burger). Burger (pljeskavica) is usually combination of minced pork&beef, sometimes it's just pork. This particular version (gurmanska pljeskavica) is mixed with onions, bacon and cheese. There is a lot of sides, I've selected extra onions, grilled chili peppers and urnebes salad (white cheese, pepper, chili and garlic).

  4. Hey, thanks Marinko! I always figured I'd be big in Belgrade. I am going to see if I can find a pljeskavica in New York City within the next couple of weeks, that sounds delicious.

  6. What do you think about this place?

    Old Bridge

The place you found isn't open for lunch during the week, which is my favorite time to go out to restaurants. But if you think the place you found is better, I will go there.

  7. Well, I found that place also. Google, Yelp, etc. Old Bridge is Bosnian BBQ (they don't use pork, because of religion), but why not, they have some interesting stuff as well. "Kafana" looks like geniune Serbian BBQ place, ok, for NYC standards.

Looking @ the menu I would recommend that you try this.

    Appetizers:

Gibanica (Pie with cheese) or Lepinja sa Kajmakom (bread with creamy spread (top layer of boiled milk skimmed)

    Grill:

Cevapi (kebab like) or Pljeskavica (Serbian burger)

    Salads:

Pecena Paprika (roasted sweet peppers with garlic)

    Main dishes:

Prebranac (boiled and then oven baked beans, there is a hot version also, with chili peppers)

I've noticed that you like your food spicy. I would ask if they have roasted chili peppers or really hot urnebes salad to go with your burger. Of course, here in Serbia there are many variations of pljeskavica, mixed with bacon, stuffed with cheese, mushrooms, etc.
