Feast of San Gennaro: A Photo Essay

  1. Wow. I see about 10 things I want. I would have kept eating until I threw up.

  2. Wow! I heard about this and am nearby but never gone. I'd go broke within minutes and would need stretchy maternity pants.

  4. Goodness, what an orgy! So many savory delights (and sweets)! Mangia Bene indeed.
I'm curious about the Potato Swirl. Will you explain what that is?
Also, by the placement of the "San Gennaro" sign, it looks like Little Italy is morphing into Chinatown.

  5. This post reminded me of two questions I was wondering about:

    1) Are you married? (If so, I'd love to hear about the food you had at the wedding!)

    2) Do you have kids? (If so, I'd love to hear about what you feed them!)

  6. Great Post. As for the Potato Swirl, I saw those at the California State Fair and its basically one long string of french fry that never really looked that great to be honest.

By the way, it this the same festival featured in Godfather 2 where Vito kills that other mobster during the fireworks?

  7. Little Italy is getting smaller and smaller every year. So sad. The festival is always a good time with good eats.

  8. Insanity! (I would be doing Insanity for the next few days after this as well). I am jealous of your access to all that spanakopita. You really got after it.

  9. Anon: Yeah, I actually wasn't all that hungry when I went, otherwise I probably would have eaten A LOT more.

Mindful: I could have gotten a sausage sandwich and given you the peppers and onions.

Jan: Liz's sister wore maternity pants! And I wished I'd had my own pair.

SuperLarge: It was great for about two hours, then it got REALLY crowded. I mean, it was a warm Friday night, no surprises there, but we left a little earlier than we'd planned to just because it became nearly impossible to walk down the street.

Nosh: See Ryan and Liz's comments below; they answer your question and observation.

Anon: The answer to both questions is no.

Ryan: Thanks man. It certainly is the same festival as Godfather II. In fact, I emailed these pics to some family and friends on Saturday morning, and I actually pointed out that this festival is the one where young Vito kills Don Fanucci, to put it in perspective for them. Mulberry Street is featured multiple times in all three movies.

Liz: That is one way of looking at it. It's being overtaken by Chinatown, which probably isn't sad to a lot of people.

  10. You should check out Little Italy on Arthur Ave in the Bronx- amazing Italian food and pizza! About an hour long subway ride from Brooklyn. (or a 20 min train from Grand Central!)

  11. also, Eataly in the Flatiron District is the best market in the city-- definitely should check that out.

  12. Thanks, that's definitely on my radar. Elizabeth went to Fordham so I'm guessing she knows the area, too.

  13. I went to Eataly once on a weekend and there was no freaking way I was going to deal with the crowds. One of these days I'll go back on a weekday afternoon.
