Our friends Bryce and Amy are in town - as well as Lucy, my precious little buddy with the cup of fries in the bottom row of my title collage - and yesterday, when trying to decide what to do, Amy saw a news report about Atlantic Antic: a one-mile stretch of Atlantic Ave shut down and filled with vendors, including plenty of food. She wanted to go.
A funny thing happened:
Elizabeth and I walked down to the subway station and waited for them to arrive. (They are staying in Manhattan.) It was a beautiful day, we sat in the shade because we were sweating in the sun.
They arrived and we walked down to Atlantic and started walking east. Still a great, bright sunny day. "I wish I'd brought sunscreen," Elizabeth said.
"Wow, look at that," Amy said, pointing behind us. Dark skies were rapidly approaching. The picture doesn't do justice. The above two pictures were taken within seconds of each other in opposite directions. We figured we had about ten minutes before it started raining, which turned out to be almost exactly right. Once the rains started, many merchants were covering up their stuff and we got on the subway at the nearest stop and headed back, not spending as much time there as we'd planned.
But here are some of the things we ate while there:
Even though Bryce's body thought it was 10 in the morning, he still wanted a sangria. Whatever, it's his vacation.
I haven't had a corn dog in a long time but it sounded good, so I got one. It was fine. When it was fried it was probably great, but who knows how much earlier that had been? It could have been sitting under the heat lamp for hours.
Amy got some fries with chili aioli. These were really good. I bet they were great when fresh. The skin-on potatoes were crispy on the outside and had just the right amount of salt. Right as we were finishing these it started raining, otherwise I probably would have gone back and gotten some more.
And here are some photos I took of things we didn't get around to eating:
Not as much fun as the Feast of San Gennaro, but still a fun event.
Go Athletics!
ReplyDeleteLove those unexpected rain events. Makes the world feel real again. Walk good!
ReplyDeleteLooks almost like a San Genaro re-do!
ReplyDeleteNot as much time to eat as you thot, but looks like plenty of time to take the food porn!
ReplyDeleteReally fun photos! I loved the one with the cheese sauce heating on the grill! ;)
ReplyDeleteWho can say no to a can of cheese? This was definitely fun, but I was a little disappointed in the non-food vendors. Nothing really interesting.
